31 Days of Goosebumps: Welcome to Dead House

book-review-19

Goosebumps, the name alone brought wonder and fear to every small child growing up in the 90’s. There wasn’t a child around who hadn’t read at least one.

“Welcome to Dead House” was the very first book in the series and started a chain reaction of scaring kids for almost 20 years!

“Welcome to Dead House,” by RL Stine is about a family of 4 who acquire a free house in “Dark Falls” from an unknown deceased uncle. Main characters, Amanda and Josh, slowly discover that Dark Falls isn’t what they hoped and must fight to stay alive.

When I was a kid, I watched the Goosebumps TV series and always thought the parents were so stupid. This book is no exception. The parents in this book are downright dumb and mean. They never listen, they fight, and are always pushing the kids out of the door. If it weren’t for them, I’m sure most of this book could have been avoided.

Of course, a lot of the stuff involving moving, money, jobs and certain rules the characters had to follow, made no sense. I want to avoid spoilers so I won’t say what happened but there were many irregularities and inconsistencies in this book. I know it’s for children so I’ll excuse it.

With that, this book is scary at times. I’m 24 years old and I found myself quite anxious while reading. I know it’ll scare children.

The ending was my least favorite part but that’s not saying much.

Overall, I enjoyed it with only a few complaints. 3.5/5 stars.
