“Monster Blood” is the 3rd book in the Goosebumps series and definitely the strangest so far.
The book takes place after Evan’s parents leave him with his weird, deaf, Great Aunt Kathyrn. She’s rude, overbearing, and refuses to learn communication skills. In his boredom and attempts to avoid his aunt, Evan meets a girl named Andy who shows him a mysterious toy shop in town. Together, they discover “Monster Blood”, a gross, green slimy in a can.
The premise of the story was good, 2 kids find green goo that won’t stop growing until it finally comes to life and tries to eat them.
It had some suspenseful moments (though RL Stine overused the misdirected scares and also used not just one, but TWO dream sequences), and it was very original. The ending felt rushed and a lot of the “twists” were forced. A child would have loved it but as an adult, it felt lazy.
98% of the book was great so I can excuse the bad writing. I would give it a 3.5 out of 5.
