31 Days of Goosebumps: Night of the Living Dummy

I was NOT looking forward to this one. I’ve had a fear of Slappy the Dummy since I was like three years old. When watching the Tv show I would skip his episodes. I pushed through it and I’m glad I did.

This review contains spoilers and a full explanation of the plot of the book.

Night of the Living Dummy is about twin sisters Lindy and Kris Powell finding a ventriloquist dummy in the dumpster. They named him Slappy and took him home. Kris becomes jealous of Lindy’s dummy so she asks for her own.

The parents bring home a new dummy named Mr. Wood just for Kris. The dummy starts performing on his own saying mean things and getting Kris into trouble. He even vomits on the audience during a talent show.

Kris is upset about being suspended from school and is woken by Mr. SWood walking on his own! They fight and Mr. Wood punches Kris in the stomach. Mr. Wood says the twins are his slaves so the girls decide to put him in a suitcase and bury him. He’s mysteriously back in the house the next day. Mr. Wood tries to choke the family dog so they  throw him in front of a steamroller and he dies. It’s revealed at the end that Slappy was alive the whole time, just watching and waiting for his chance to shine!

I LOVED this book. It was scary, imaginative, creepy and the parents were dumb but believable! I liked that they mentioned getting a mental doctor for Kris. Most Goosebumps parents wouldn’t have done that.

I give this 4 out of 5 stars because it was misleading that Slappy would be the main antagonist.
